Guernsey Modern Dance Classes

Why Modern dance?

D5-02
Modern is a fun and fast moving discipline, which compliments Ballet and Tap very well, it also opens the door to Jazz, which broadens the horizons of any dancer – which is vital in today’s competitive dance world.

Guernsey Modern Dance Classes start at the age of 5 yrs (or 3, in our combined Introduction to Tap & Modern class) .

A warm-up starts off each of the lessons, leading into stretching and strengthening exercises for the legs and core, isolating different parts of the body, and moving to different types of music. As with Ballet and Tap, the class progresses to a rhythm section which builds in each grade; giving the children a good knowledge of music and its qualities.

The class then builds into the dance movement section, where students begin to learn how to turn, leap, kick, use the floor, jump, and put these together into free amalgamations and dance routines. The end section of the lesson is dedicated to developing  these routines in a specific style. Modern dance incorporates different styles and is portrayed in different ways depending on the music style. It has a great fun element allowing the children to express themselves and contribute to the Class.

Modern dance is a fun and light-hearted discipline and suits a child with bags of energy and/or a bubbly personality.

As the children go up through the Grades they build strength, flexibility, confidence and the ability to master varying styles. The grades are great fun, fast moving and have a large range of dance qualities and individual dance moves. For the older student this discipline affords a breadth and depth, which is very rewarding and allows students to be creative through improvisation.

Modern dance exams

As for Ballet, Modern dance exams are undertaken from the age of 6yrs with Grade 1, through to Grade 6 and on to the Vocational qualifications.

All exams are taken with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing.

Exams are not compulsory: the choice lies with parent and child. However, they are encouraged since they develop a sense of achievement.

Watching week

We hold a ‘Watching Week’ at the end of the Autumn and Summer term  when the parents are invited into the classroom to watch the last class. Cameras are permitted and the children enjoy showing parents their achievements of the term. A great way to finish off the term.
